One-Day Emergency Safe Hold Home For Homeless Women And Their Children (established 2017)

In September 2017, six remarkable and brave women embarked on a challenging journey of living alone on the streets of Krugersdorp for twelve days and nights. This courageous act marked the beginning of Melodie van Brakel’s relentless campaign to shed light on the struggles faced by people experiencing homelessness, particularly vulnerable and abused women. The ONE-DAY EMERGENCY SAFE HOLD HOME was established thanks to the unwavering support of the media and community, who tirelessly rallied behind this cause.

The ONE DAY EMERGENCY SAFE HOLD HOME is a temporary refuge for homeless, destitute, vulnerable, and abused women and their children. It provides a vital lifeline, offering emergency, overnight safety to approximately thirty women and their children. Within the home, they find solace in a warm, clean bed with bedding, access to a hot shower, basic toiletries, and a satisfying dinner. Our dedicated Social Worker evaluates their situations, compiling a comprehensive report addressing their circumstances and specific needs.

On 1 April 2020, the shelter become fully owned, managed and operated by THE CRADLE OF HOPE, and renamed THE CRADLE OF HOPE ONE DAY EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR WOMEN.

The shelter provides emergency, temporary, overnight safety to 24 women & their children; this includes a warm & clean bed with bedding, a hot shower, basic toiletries and a nutritious, filling dinner. The women and children that are assisted at the shelter mostly come to us as a result of domestic trauma and abuse and human trafficking.
